Ewen Maddock DamJust north of Landsborough the Glasshouse Mountains highway crosses the southern reach of the Ewen Maddock Dam. On a hot day the brief glimpse of the sparkling blue waters is a welcome respite from the shimmering road and baking eucalypts. At the northern end of the causeway is a space to pull off the road and explore the Dam's attractions. A pleasantly landscaped car park and 500m bush track to the shore alongside a babbling brook lead to the untouched charms of 'Big Blue'. Travelling past the car park brings the visitor to "Camp X" - the Ewen Maddock Dam Environment & Recreation Centre - an initiative of the Caloundra City Council now leased by Camps ® Us. This area, well-stocked with toys for all ages, mainly caters to school groups and corporate bookings. I understand that it is virtually unavailable to the public during the week. However, with advance booking, you may be able to camp or hire a cabin on a weekend. Activities include:-
For those who stopped at the front car park, there is a flat and level walk to the shores of the dam along a waterscaped path abounding with birdlife and water plants. There are many picnic tables along the way but - be warned - there is little in the way of shade.(31/10/2001) All in all this is a delightful stopping place for the motorist to enjoy a moist, verdant oasis.
